Location and AccessThe Guild's building is at 149 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, between St. Paul's Terrace and Water Street. We function from the two storey, former Masonic Temple, within walking distance of the Brunswick Street train station and many Fortitude Valley bus stops.
Members' MeetingsThere are usually two formal meetings of the members held each year to discuss the business of the Guild - the AGM and the half yearly meeting. These are held in February and August. Come and stitch, change your library books, view the periodically changing displays. Weekly gatherings of members are held on the following days: Meetings at the Guild Rooms
Night groups held at: Northside, Southside, North-West and Bayside/Cleveland. Ring for times and venues. MembershipAny person who is interested in the art of embroidery may join. Click here for membership details. VisitorsVisitors are welcome whenever the Guild Rooms are open and may make two visits before being expected to decide on joining. A basic sewing machine, a light box and smocking pleater are available for members' use, as are irons and boards. A photocopier is also available - a small charge is made for its use. of page] A members newsletter, Queensland Embroidery, is published 10 times per year. It is provided to all members of the Guild and is a source of news, events, competitions and class information. The newsletter is the main forum for members of the Guild to communicate with the wider Guild community. Reports of Show and Tell held on the 1st Thursday and Saturday of each month can be found in the newsletters. ClassesClasses in various embroidery techniques are held. Guild, interstate and overseas tutors provide exciting classes throughout the year. Click here for details. Each member on joining the Guild may attend, free of charge, a basic stitches class. Young Creative Embroiderers' Classes are held in most school holidays. The classes allow children from 6 to 16 to learn techniques and complete a project. ExhibitionsAn exhibition of members' work is mounted every two years. This is open to the public. Several pieces of members' work are on permanent display. "Show and Tell" sessions of recently completed works are held on the first Thursday and first Saturday of each month. The work of tutors is displayed from time to time also. We participate in demonstrations at various venues each year. From Saturday 31 May 2008 to Saturday 7th June 2008, the Guild held an exhibition of members' work entitled, Fabulous Forty, celebrating 40 years of the Guild. LibraryThere is an extensive lending Library which is open whenever members are present. A continually expanding collection of over 2000 books and magazines - some for reference only, but most may be borrowed for 2 weeks. [top
of page] The Guild collects embroideries and accepts donations of embroideries from the public. A constantly growing study collection of old and new embroideries mostly gifted to the Guild, which represents as widely as possible the type and style of embroidery of all periods and from all parts of the world. The embroidries date from about 1650 to the present. Throughout the year there are changing displays in the main meeting room. A yearly acquisition prize allows for members work to be acquired on a regular basis. These pieces are on permanent display. Craft FairsCraft Fairs are held in the Guild Rooms twice yearly, in April and in November. CompetitionsEach year an Embroiderer of the Year is selected by the members for outstanding service.The Embroidery of Charm Competition is also held each year. Items to purchase1.
