This is a workshop in both design and embroidery with particular reference to the textiles of North Africa and in particular those from nomadic groups of the Maghreb, Horn & Sahara regions. On Day 1, students will first become acquainted with these motifs and their historical and cultural background and then use them in a design process which includes shape, texture, colour, line & space. They will then work these elements into their own unique design following the principles of composition, repetition, contrast, symmetry & proportion. There will also be exercises in using hand embroidery to represent line & texture. Students then have a week to develop their design before starting to stitch it on Day 2. Stitching techniques include appliqué, reverse appliqué, hand stitching and embellishment with beads, cords & tassels. The small (A4 size) wallhanging that is created could also be used on the front of a bag, cushion or bookcover. Class is suitable for all skill levels.
